What is 2048?
2048 is a single-player sliding puzzle where you combine numbered tiles on a 4×4 grid to reach the elusive 2048 tile. Every move slides every tile in the chosen direction — matching tiles merge into their double, an empty cell fills with a new 2 or 4, and the game continues until no legal move remains.
The rules are simple but the strategy runs deep. Experienced players focus on keeping their biggest tile in a corner, building tidy chains along an edge, and never breaking the row of highest values. Reaching 2048 is a rewarding first goal; keep going to chase 4096, 8192 and beyond for a personal best.
This version runs entirely in your browser and remembers your best score locally, so nothing about your play is uploaded anywhere. Take a break from real work with a quick game — or lose an hour, we understand.
How to use the 2048
- 1Use the arrow keys (or WASD) on desktop to slide every tile in the chosen direction.
- 2On mobile, swipe up, down, left or right on the board.
- 3When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into a doubled tile — that adds their value to your score.
- 4After every move a new 2 or (rarely) 4 appears in a random empty cell.
- 5Aim to build a 2048 tile — the game announces the milestone but you can keep merging for bigger tiles.
- 6When no legal move is left, the game ends. Click "New game" to start again.

Examples
Corner strategy
Keep your largest tile in the bottom-right and only ever swipe left / down / right — this locks the tile in place and lets you build orderly chains.
Never swipe up
Many pros play thousands of moves without ever pressing the up arrow. It preserves the corner discipline that makes 4096+ possible.
Merge cascades
Line up 2-4-8-16 along a row. A single swipe can collapse the whole row into a single 32.

Frequently asked questions
How do I win?
Reach a tile with the number 2048. After the first 2048 you can keep merging to chase 4096, 8192 and beyond.
Are new tiles always 2?
Most of the time yes — with a 10% chance of spawning a 4 instead.
Is there an undo button?
Not currently — part of the challenge is thinking each move through. An undo feature is on the roadmap.
Does my best score sync between devices?
No — it is saved in your browser locally. Sign-in-based sync would require an account, which ToolSink deliberately avoids.
Does the game work on iPad and Android tablets?
Yes — swipe controls work on any touch device.
